The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation factors on work performance in banking sectors of Malaysia with psychological ownership as mediator. There are quantitative and qualitative types of research conducted in most of the studies. Quantitative approach designed to search for answer to a question through analysis of quantitative data based on figures and numbers (Tahir, Yousafzai, Jan &Hashim, 2014). However, Patton (2002) argued that qualitative approach analysis assist researchers to perform fieldwork without the restrictions by any fixed categories of analysis. So, quantitative analysis utilize to measure the correlation between the data sets as a sample. As study constructed from theoretical reasoning and literature review, so quantitative method is most suitable to be adapted in this study. Furthermore, this study is conducted for the purpose of testing the hypotheses that derived from the conceptual framework existed. It is believed that studies constructed for hypothesis testing normally able to explain the nature of certain relationship or identify the differences among groups or the independence of two factors or more in a situation. Hypothesis testing provides an insightful analysis on understanding of relationships that occurred among variables. So, the variables are considered as the means for the quantitative researcher to conduct the analysis (Brannen, 2005; Saunders et al., 2012)
As the types of investigation, this study conducted correlation analysis to examine the strength of relationship between variables. Correlation analysis outcome provide correlation coefficient which measures the linear relationship between independent and dependent variables (Crossman, 2013). So, Pearson Correlation statistical technique will be utilized in this study to determine the relationship among intrinsic and extrinsic motivating factors, psychological ownership and work performance before conduct the hierarchical regression analysis. As per suggestion by Baron and Kenny (1986), the researcher need to prove correlation between two independent, mediating variable and dependent variables before examine the mediating role of variable in the relationship between predictors and outcome.
